Patrick Mthanyana was born in Cape Town on the 28th of September 1960 but grew up in the village of Qumbu-Thwa Location in the Transkei. His family was very poor and medical treatment was scarce, and at the age of 4 he was blinded by a bout of measles. This however didn’t dim his enthusiasm for life and he developed a love of music. Patrick started out singing traditional songs, but was introduced to Gospel music in his late teens, and it is this that has developed into his passion has helped him get where he is today.
In 1990 he returned to Cape Town, together with a wife and two children, who Patrick refers to as his “Blessings”, because they were born amidst so many trials and tribulations.
Blindness is not a factor in Patrick’s life, and one of his favorite jokes is to greet friends with “Long time no hear”. It is this positive attitude that has helped him achieve much during his life and besides his musical achievements, he held a job in a cane furniture manufacturing company for many years, proving that his disability was something that could be overcome.
In November 2004, he was introduced to Mohamed Fall of Vibrations Studio, by a mutual friend, Mathanzima Baleni. They both realized the great potential in this man, who had a long - held dream of recording a Gospel album. Patrick had recently formed a new group which he named the Salvation Messengers comprising five talented young musicians from his neighborhood and working with Mohamed they recorded an album called Patrick and the Salvation Messengers which has been released under the Vibrations Recording Studio label.
Patrick is quoted as saying, “Music is the food of my life, and it gives me inner peace”. He has a spiritual vision and intends reaching as many people as possible with his music. He is a shining example to all that we have the power to turn our lives around, even in the midst of extreme hardships. Look out for this talented man.
